speak, pen

2019 - current

Texts have long been used as a medium of conveying both meaning and visual aesthetes. While some artists like Jenny Holzer and Barbara Kruger utilizes texts to get out powerful messages in their artwork, others like Ed Ruscha who's painting often depicts texts as still life objects also emphasize the shapes and compositions of the words themselves. In concrete poetry, meaning is conveyed by graphic patterns of the texts, and rhythm is experienced through the composition. And for digital art, although unseen, every work is power by pieces of text - code.
Speak, Pen is a web-based drawing instrument programmed in JavaScript. It replaces the traditional paintbrush with text inputs. Users are able to create interactive drawings with text on the canvas. Created during a radical tool workshop, the work explores the materiality of text and the ways in which users experiment with text using the instrument beyond its semantic functions.

poemHead

2019 - current

When I first came across a poetry website in search of a beloved poem, I was shocked to notice the attached voice reading of the poem is computer generated. It seems to be such an absurd and ridiculous way of portraying the art of poetry. I made the first video for Poemhead.com that day. Taking the absurdity to an extreme, PoemHead.com does not exist as a critique to the reading of poem, but a platform of a strange collection of poetries. It exists as another poetry website, where you will not come across poems but a new synthesis of anticipation and disorientation. Poems are now merely a medium. Perhaps, after lunch at work today, you opened up Poemhead.com, then it's not meant to be taken seriously. Open up a poem and enjoy.

ABOUT

Chai Yuzhu is an artist, creative technologist, and an active member of the creative coding community. Her work spans visual art, computation, language, and storytelling. Using code to explore the possibilities of poetics via the materiality of text. She think of poetics in its original Greek meaning - 'to make' - her work aim to inspire and evoke interaction.

In her work, original text is often fractured, recombined, and repositioned in virtual space to create texture, architectural forms, multiple viewpoints, and interactivity. The narrative and the meaning of the original story is embedded in its changing form, thus, the work is not meant to be read, but instead to be seen and performed.

Viewers constantly fragment and reassemble the text, requiring them to seek multiple vantage points and to produce alternative narratives. This interactivity allows the readers to become the makers of the story.
